The indigenous Piaroa people live in the midst of Venezuelan and Colombian tropical forests on an area equivalent to the size of Belgium. Their total population is around 14,494. The name „Piaroa“ is a term of unknown origin, but they are also known as the De’arua (masters of the forest), Wothuha (knowledgeable people) and De’atʰïhä (people of the forest). The most peculiar thing about them is their strong sense of peace, equality, individual autonomy and anti-authoritarianism. The reason behind their strong need to foster peace and equality is their belief in a mythic past, where angry gods gained power and wealth through competition, aggression and greed. As a result of such behaviour, they have corrupted future relations within and between communities.
Yopo shamans describe this experience as the ability to perceive a third eye opening in light of non-physical spiritual dimensions. The center of the Sikuani Yopo tradition is the use of prayers to invoke healing energies. They believe that their word and the tonal vibration of their prayer is the very power of creation. For every imbalance and disease that is created or arises, there is a corresponding prayer to cure this disease. Sikuani elder shamans know 2000 or more prayers and study intensively from the age of 8.
Traditionally, this medicine is applied by using a pipe made from bamboo or bone, which is blown through each nostril on both sides. This can be self-administered using a V-shaped self-applicator pipe, known as a ‘Kuripe’ pipe which connects the mouth to the nostrils. It can also be administered by another person using a large blow pipe, which connects the blower’s mouth to the other person’s nostrils. This blow pipe is known as a ‘Tepi’ pipe.
